Beetroot juice lowers blood pressure within hours, with effects lasting up to 24 hours. A Lancet study showed 250ml of beetroot juice dropped systolic BP by 7-10 mmHg within 6 hours, with sustained reduction at 24 hours.
Mechanism: beetroot is high in dietary nitrates. Mouth bacteria convert these to nitrites, then to nitric oxide in the blood โ which relaxes blood vessels. This is the same nitric oxide pathway targeted by some BP medications.
What to do: drink 250ml beetroot juice once daily, or eat 1 cooked beetroot per day. Effects peak at 2-3 hours.
Watch out: beetroot juice can turn urine pink (harmless). May cause low BP if combined with BP medications โ monitor carefully. Mouthwash kills the bacteria needed for nitrate conversion โ avoid antibacterial mouthwash if relying on beets for BP.
Potassium-rich foods (banana, leafy greens, avocado) work in a similar way over longer periods.
