The complete answer

Coffee is one of the few drinks that genuinely lowers uric acid. Research shows 3-4 cups of coffee daily reduces gout attack risk by 30-40%.

How it works: caffeine inhibits xanthine oxidase, the enzyme that produces uric acid (the same enzyme allopurinol targets). Coffee antioxidants also help kidneys clear uric acid faster.

What to do: drink black coffee or with a small splash of milk. Avoid sugar โ€” fructose raises uric acid significantly. Decaf has a smaller benefit but still helps.

What actually triggers gout: beer (worst trigger), sugary drinks, fruit juice โ€” these all spike uric acid.
