The complete answer

Tomatoes are technically low in purines, so they should not theoretically trigger gout. But research surveying 2,000 gout patients found 20% identified tomatoes as a personal trigger.

The mechanism: tomatoes are slightly acidic and contain compounds that may temporarily raise serum urate in sensitive individuals. This is highly individual.

What to do: try eliminating tomatoes for 4 weeks and see if attacks reduce. If you tolerate them, they are fine โ€” even beneficial because of lycopene. If you notice flares within 24-48 hours, count them as a personal trigger.

Not everyone with gout reacts the same way. Test, don't assume.
