The complete answer

Lemon water can help lower uric acid, though the effect is modest. It works by alkalising the urine rather than the blood directly.

Despite tasting acidic, lemon juice has an alkalising effect once metabolised. More alkaline urine helps kidneys excrete uric acid more efficiently. A 2017 study showed daily lemon juice reduced serum uric acid by 0.3-0.5 mg/dL over 6 weeks.

What to do: squeeze half a lemon into a glass of water in the morning. Drink it before meals or throughout the day. Aim for 2-3 lemons daily during gout flares.

Lemon water is helpful but not magic. It works alongside hydration (3L water daily), reduced purine intake, and weight management. Tart cherry juice has stronger evidence.
