Q

Should I avoid spinach if I have high uric acid?

โšก Quick answer
No โ€” spinach is fine despite containing some purines. Plant purines do not trigger attacks like animal purines.

The complete answer

Despite containing moderate purines, spinach does not increase gout risk. The Health Professionals Follow-up Study tracked 47,000 men and found no association between high-purine vegetables (including spinach) and gout attacks.

The reason: plant purines are absorbed differently than animal purines. The body handles them more efficiently. Plus, vegetables provide alkalising effects, fibre, and antioxidants that protect against gout.

What to do: eat spinach freely. Same applies to asparagus, mushrooms, and lentils โ€” all once-feared as gout triggers but cleared by modern research.

What actually triggers gout: organ meats, anchovies, sardines, mussels, beer, sugary drinks, and fructose.
