Dairy is one of the strongest food triggers for acne, particularly in teens and young adults. Multiple large studies (Harvard Nurses Health Study, JAMA Dermatology) confirm the link.
Mechanism: dairy contains hormones (IGF-1, growth factors) and triggers insulin spikes โ both promote sebum production and inflammation.
Which dairy is worst: skim milk causes more acne than full-fat (counter-intuitive โ but the milk solids are more concentrated). Whey protein supplements are common acne triggers in athletes. Cheese and yoghurt have a smaller effect.
Who is most affected: 60-70% of acne sufferers see improvement when cutting dairy. Some are unaffected.
How to test: cut all dairy strictly for 30 days. Note skin changes. Reintroduce one item at a time (yoghurt first, then cheese, then milk) and watch for breakouts within 24-72 hours.
What to replace: almond milk, oat milk, coconut milk for drinks. Coconut yoghurt, soy yoghurt. Hard cheeses tolerated better than soft.
Not every acne case is dairy-driven. Sugar and refined carbs are equal or stronger triggers for some people.
