The complete answer

A proper eczema elimination diet takes 8-12 weeks total to identify food triggers.

Phase 1 โ€” Strict elimination (4-8 weeks):
Remove the most common triggers:
- Dairy (all forms)
- Gluten (all wheat, barley, rye)
- Eggs
- Soy
- Tree nuts and peanuts
- Shellfish
- Citrus
- Tomatoes
- Nightshades (in some cases)
- All processed foods, sugar, alcohol

What to eat: meat, fish (not shellfish), most vegetables, rice, oats (gluten-free certified), olive oil, avocado, sweet potato.

Phase 2 โ€” Reintroduction (4 weeks): introduce one food group every 3-4 days. Watch for flares within 48 hours. Common pattern: dairy and gluten flare 24-48 hours after; eggs flare slower.

Why strict: partial attempts fail. Even small amounts of trigger foods reset the inflammation clock.

Who should NOT do this: children without medical supervision, pregnant women, people with eating disorders. Get a dietitian.

Reality: 60-70% of adult eczema patients identify dietary triggers through proper elimination. Most common: dairy, gluten, eggs.
