You can eat fruit with diabetes โ but choice and portion matter. Best fruits: berries (blueberries, strawberries, raspberries) have the lowest glycemic impact. One cup raises glucose minimally because of fibre. Apples, pears, and citrus are also excellent.
Limit: bananas (especially ripe), pineapple, mango, watermelon โ high natural sugar. Half a banana is OK; a whole ripe one can spike glucose 50+ mg/dL.
Avoid: dried fruits and fruit juice. Dates, raisins, and dried apricots are concentrated sugar bombs. Even fresh-squeezed juice removes the fibre that slows sugar absorption.
Key trick: pair fruit with protein or fat (apple with peanut butter, berries with Greek yoghurt). This flattens the glucose response by 30-50%. Test your blood sugar 1-2 hours after eating to learn your personal response.
