Magnesium glycinate is the best form for anxiety. Bound to the amino acid glycine (itself calming), it provides both magnesium and a relaxation effect.
The science: magnesium activates GABA receptors โ the same calming pathway targeted by anti-anxiety medications. Most people are mildly deficient, and even mild deficiency mimics anxiety perfectly.
Why glycinate specifically:
- Best absorption (over 80%)
- Glycine adds calming effect
- No laxative effect (unlike citrate or oxide)
- Gentle on stomach
- Crosses blood-brain barrier well
Alternative for cognitive benefit: magnesium L-threonate. More expensive but specifically designed to enter the brain. Better for focus and memory.
Dose: 300-400mg elemental magnesium daily, taken before bed. Start low (200mg) and increase to avoid loose stools.
Forms to AVOID for anxiety:
- Magnesium oxide: poor absorption, mostly laxative
- Magnesium aspartate: can be excitotoxic in high doses
Timeline: most people notice improved sleep within 3-7 days. Anxiety reduction over 2-4 weeks.
Food sources for magnesium: pumpkin seeds (highest), dark chocolate, almonds, spinach, avocado.
Get tested: RBC magnesium (more accurate than serum). Supplement based on actual deficiency.
