Soy is one of the most controversial foods. The truth: traditional whole soy is healthy in moderation. Highly processed soy products are different.
Whole soy foods (healthy in moderation):
- Edamame (whole soybeans)
- Tofu (firm or silken)
- Tempeh (fermented)
- Miso (fermented)
- Natto (fermented)
Processed soy (limit):
- Soy protein isolate (in protein bars, supplements)
- Texturized vegetable protein (fake meats)
- Soybean oil (industrial seed oil โ limit)
- Soy lecithin (in processed foods)
The phytoestrogen concern: soy contains isoflavones โ plant compounds that weakly mimic estrogen. Research is reassuring: soy does NOT cause breast cancer (some studies show protective effect). Does NOT lower testosterone in men in normal amounts. Does NOT cause "man boobs" at typical intake.
Who should be cautious:
- People with hypothyroidism (limit raw soy)
- Hormone-sensitive cancers (talk to doctor)
- Soy allergy (genuine, sometimes severe)
Reasonable amount: 1-2 servings daily of whole soy is fine for most people. A serving = 1/2 cup edamame or 100g tofu.
Bottom line: traditional fermented soy is among the healthiest foods on Earth. Industrial processed soy is just industrial food.
