The complete answer

Hydration is the single most important factor for kidney stone prevention. Studies show people who drink over 2.5L daily have 50% lower stone recurrence than those who drink less than 2L.

The target: 2.5-3 litres of fluid daily, with at least 2 litres being plain water.

Why: concentrated urine = stone formation. Dilute urine = stone prevention. Urinary citrate (a natural stone inhibitor) works better when urine is dilute.

The simplest test: urine should be pale yellow throughout the day. Dark yellow = drink more.

When to drink more:
- Hot weather or sweating
- Exercise
- Air-conditioned environments (dehydration is silent)
- After eating high-oxalate foods
- After drinking alcohol

What counts:
- Plain water (best)
- Lemon water (citrate prevents stones)
- Herbal teas
- Soup

What helps stone prevention:
- Squeeze lemon in water โ€” citrate directly prevents stones
- Reduce sodium (high salt increases calcium excretion)
- Adequate calcium WITH meals (binds oxalates in gut)
- Reduce animal protein excess

What to avoid:
- Sodas (phosphoric acid promotes stones)
- Sugary drinks
- Dehydrating drinks (alcohol, large coffee servings)

Key timing: hydrate evenly through the day, not all at once. Sip steadily. Wake up and drink water before coffee.

Identify your stone type before changing diet โ€” different stones need different approaches (calcium oxalate, uric acid, struvite, cystine).
