Both have advantages โ depends on what you need.
Cow milk (full-fat or skim):
- Protein: 8g per cup (high quality, complete)
- Calcium: 30% DV (highly bioavailable)
- Vitamin B12: 50% DV
- Vitamin D (fortified): 25% DV
- Calories: 100-150 per cup
- Sugar: 12g (natural lactose)
Almond milk (unsweetened):
- Protein: 1g per cup (very low)
- Calcium: 30% DV (fortified, less bioavailable)
- Vitamin E: high
- Calories: 30-40 per cup
- Sugar: 0-1g if unsweetened
Who should choose almond milk:
- Lactose intolerant
- Calorie-conscious
- Acne-prone (dairy can trigger acne)
- Vegan
- Don't need extra protein
Who should choose cow milk:
- Active people who need protein
- Children and teens (growth, calcium)
- Older adults (sarcopenia, bone health)
- Tolerate dairy well
- Need calorie-dense food
Watch for:
- Sweetened almond milk: often 8-10g sugar (avoid)
- "Cocoa" or "vanilla" plant milks: usually sugary
- Almond milk has very little almond โ mostly water with calcium added
Reality: neither is "best." Use what fits your body and goals. Many people use both โ almond milk in coffee, cow milk for protein needs.
Better than both: kefir (probiotic + protein + calcium) for digestive health.
